Floor lamps do present some safety concerns.  The heavy tops are susceptible to toppling over, causing damage to the lamp and possibly its surroundings.  Additionally, most torchiere lamps (which make up the majority of floor lamps) use halogen bulbs, which become extremely hot when being used.
